It was meant to begin as an experience in Marsala, but it turned into a remarkable journey of winemaking on Mount Etna. Sonia’s story, known as Gustinella, is truly unique. Born on the slopes of Etna, in Maletto, she had always lived in the north, in Milano. She studied in Pollenzo and later specialized in oenology.

Shortly before the Covid pandemic began, she had planned to gain experience with Barraco in Marsala, but everything came to a halt. Unable to return to Milano due to travel restrictions, she took refuge in her family home on Etna, back in Maletto.
What followed is a beautiful story of community. In the village, many elderly people owned small vineyards, whom Sonia met almost by chance. She began by receiving small quantities of grapes from different people, and gradually more and more. Today, Gustinella produces outstanding, authentic wines on the slopes of Europe’s most fascinating active volcano, at around 1,000 meters above sea level.

Life often has a plan for us, and sometimes, it’s truly unexpected.
